Summary

Texas, 1934。

Wow, What an amazing book! A must read!

Page turner storyThe protagonist journeys through the adversity of a family who doesn’t love her, a husband who resents her, a difficult 14 year old daughter, The DustBowl, the Depression and California cotton picking。 But she doesn’t give up and finds admiration and love。

Excellent book。 Very sad and heartbreaking at times describing this family’s journey through the Great Depression。 Just when you thought they were finally coming through the worst times, they’d get knocked down again。 Kept me engaged until the end and hopeful for a good ending。

Best so far by this author!!!!

Outstanding! I learned so much! I haven't really read about the drought and dust storms of the 1930's。There was a great interview with the Author afterwards with reference to a book list of her research。 It would be so tragic to loose all that you have! So many many great quotes from this book!"My Grandfather was a Texas Ranger, he used to tell me that Courage was a lie, it was just fear that you ignored。""We fought - we struggled - we hurt each other - so what。 That's what love is I think! I can’t say this is The Nightingale 5 star but still another great story by Kristin Hannah。

Another one of Kristin Hannah’s masterpieces。 Oddly it exposes a lot of what was wrong in America then that may so be wrong now? Powerful story with beauty and heartbreak woven in as per usual with her books。

Heartbreaking。 The struggles encountered during the 1930s are depressing。 I feel like this really hits home during this pandemic with job loss, immigration, and human rights。 A mother will do anything for her children, and I think that’s what broke me the most。

WOW。 Nothing I could say here will do this work of art justice。 I knew going in this would be a heavy read。 As expected, I am gutted - and yet so happy I did not pass it up。 The Author’s Note at the end was the icing on the cake。。。do not skip those pages, even if you’re reading through tears at that point。 This was the first of Kristin Hannah’s books I have read, and cannot wait to get my hands on more。

This book was just one bad event after another。

I love a good Kristin Hannah。 She writes a lot of the same character types in her books。 I did not know much about the dust bowl, so it was interesting to learn more about that time period。 Knowing that people went through what she writes about is heartbreaking。 I also felt like the timing of the book's release (around the pandemic) made the subject feel very close to the surface and relatable。 I love a good Kristin Hannah。 She writes a lot of the same character types in her books。 I did not know much about the dust bowl, so it was interesting to learn more about that time period。 Knowing that people went through what she writes about is heartbreaking。 I also felt like the timing of the book's release (around the pandemic) made the subject feel very close to the surface and relatable。 。。。more

If you can’t handle the heaviness of struggle and survival then you should pass on this。 But I can。 I find beauty in devastation。 And I find peoples tenacity inspiring。 This writing was phenomenal。 The story was absolutely heartbreaking! And cried my face off。 And this novel is written so accurately that it was like a refresher course on the dust bowl。

The Grapes of Wrath was better and this book is almost the same

This is the second Kristin Hannah I have read and it was very compelling。 The characters, even with quite a large cast, we're not flat。 This is a novel that explores all aspects of the Dust Bowl and Great Depression era。 From dust storms to shantytowns to the Communist Movement, we get to see it all。 Elsa and Loretta have to deal with their mom/daughter relationship while fighting poverty and other challenges。The plot kept moving and the characters felt real。 This is the second Kristin Hannah I have read and it was very compelling。 The characters, even with quite a large cast, we're not flat。 This is a novel that explores all aspects of the Dust Bowl and Great Depression era。 From dust storms to shantytowns to the Communist Movement, we get to see it all。 Elsa and Loretta have to deal with their mom/daughter relationship while fighting poverty and other challenges。The plot kept moving and the characters felt real。 。。。more

Lengthy and super depressing, but a painful chapter in history all the same。

Like Kristin Hannah's other novels, this story made me feel everything - shock, sadness, rage, joy, and everything in between。 I got caught up in the characters lives quickly, and read more than half the book in one sitting。 I loved it。 Like Kristin Hannah's other novels, this story made me feel everything - shock, sadness, rage, joy, and everything in between。 I got caught up in the characters lives quickly, and read more than half the book in one sitting。 I loved it。 。。。more

A woman's journey of self-discovery through the hard knocks of life during the 1920's and 30's。 A woman that finds the inner strength and courage to take care of her family during the Great Depression and the fight she must endure for fairness in human decency。 A woman's journey of self-discovery through the hard knocks of life during the 1920's and 30's。 A woman that finds the inner strength and courage to take care of her family during the Great Depression and the fight she must endure for fairness in human decency。 。。。more

This heart just rips your heart out。 It was depressing and inspiring。 Great read。

No amount of the beautiful aspects of this historical fiction can overcome the glorification of communism contained therein, especially when considering the rise of Stalin and the mass killings under his rule during the same time period in which The Four Winds is set。

Heartbreaking StoryWell written story of a fantastic woman who refused to let life during the most difficult times destroy her and her children。 I didn't want the story to end the way it did。 Heartbreaking StoryWell written story of a fantastic woman who refused to let life during the most difficult times destroy her and her children。 I didn't want the story to end the way it did。 。。。more

This a heartbreaking story of resilience, sacrifice, love, hope and courage。 It is about one woman's journey from childhood trauma and rejection to unconditional acceptance and love。 Kristin Hannah’s research is impeccable, her words so brilliant you can feel yourself physically in the moment, transported to the place you are reading about。I recommend watching Ken Burns Documentary about the Dust Bowl as well! https://www。pbs。org/kenburns/dustbowl/ This a heartbreaking story of resilience, sacrifice, love, hope and courage。 It is about one woman's journey from childhood trauma and rejection to unconditional acceptance and love。 Kristin Hannah’s research is impeccable, her words so brilliant you can feel yourself physically in the moment, transported to the place you are reading about。I recommend watching Ken Burns Documentary about the Dust Bowl as well! https://www。pbs。org/kenburns/dustbowl/ 。。。more

I normally do not read the genre of historical fiction but an author group I am in has a book read of the month challenge and this was this months read so I decided to read it。 I am so glad I did。 It is a story that will stay with me forever。 I love finding new to me authors。 This is definitely one of my top reads ever。My emotions where all over the place while reading this。 I was brought to tears several times both from sadness and anger。 I love a good strong female character and Elsa is that i I normally do not read the genre of historical fiction but an author group I am in has a book read of the month challenge and this was this months read so I decided to read it。 I am so glad I did。 It is a story that will stay with me forever。 I love finding new to me authors。 This is definitely one of my top reads ever。My emotions where all over the place while reading this。 I was brought to tears several times both from sadness and anger。 I love a good strong female character and Elsa is that in spades。 Both as a child and adult。 She has been through hell。 She is a warrior。 I don't like to spoil anything in books so I will leave it at that。 Thank you Net-Galley for a copy of the book。 。。。more

3。5 This Author really is a master fiction writer。 The diversity of her work is also really impressive。 She can write from any time period on any topic and do a good job。 The thing she can write best though is women。 I love her writing for that。 Women aren't just pretty things。 They are survivors, providers, warriors。 This book depicts that idea just as well as the rest of them。 I thought I knew about the great depression and the dust bowl but never have I actually visualized the horrors that th 3。5 This Author really is a master fiction writer。 The diversity of her work is also really impressive。 She can write from any time period on any topic and do a good job。 The thing she can write best though is women。 I love her writing for that。 Women aren't just pretty things。 They are survivors, providers, warriors。 This book depicts that idea just as well as the rest of them。 I thought I knew about the great depression and the dust bowl but never have I actually visualized the horrors that those people went through。 Hannah did her research。 I could see the endless horizon of dead land。 I could taste the dust in my mouth。 I could smell the tent community。 I could feel the cotton ripping my hands open。 She is a must read Author。 That being said this was probably my least favorite of her books。 While still very well written and interesting I felt the pacing was off。 The first 3/4 of the book were very slow (again, still interesting) while the last quarter raced by。 I needed more about the strikes and riots。 I want details about what happened because of Elsa's heroism。 The strike also needed more buildup in my mind。 If it had I think I would've been more emotional at the end。 For a Kristin Hannah novel there were only a couple tears。 Can't wait to read another one by her 。。。more

4。5 stars。 Couldn’t put this one down, such a good story。 Relevant to things going on in today’s society。 My only complaint is I wasn’t happy with the ending, although I’m sure it is true to the reality of life in those times。 Such a sad story, but at the same time a story that highlights the strengths and dedication of mothers/women when it comes to the love they/we have for our kids。
